A chance conversation with a policeman at Blairgowrie changed my route, To Braemer,Tomintoul, Grantown-on-Spery and finishing at Aviemore. He let me off with a caution, no mention of a donation mind.
Day 4 Aviemore to Ullapool via John O' Groats
Depart 0900 Arrived 1735 305 miles.
At one time I thought someone was doing their washing on the beach, For what appeared to be soap bubbles were blowing across the road until I realised there were no houses? I can only assume it was the froth off the tops of the waves being blown up on to the road
Day 5 Ullapool to Stirling
Departed 0900 Arrived 1647 219 miles.
The sky was looking a bit heavy as I turned out of the garage to continue my ride only to find a diesel spill on the road as I was trying to avoid it the rain started. Nothing is water proof when talking about the rain in Scotland The diesel spill went on for 13 miles, interesting the importance minor incidents take on. Loch Ness came in sight and there was a wake on the Loch with no boat in sight I convinced myself it was Nessy
Day 6 Stirling to Cockermouth
Departed 0900 Arrived 1648 172 miles.
M roads were not as foreboding as in England, passing through Lockerbie and stopping at Gretna Green for coffee. I was given the thumbs up from a man in a camper van who turned out to be a Scott's classic road racer, racing a Rickman Trident, but he was hankering after a single and the Velocette was his preferred choice. Till he saw me trying to start. The hostel was a converted water mill delightful setting
Day 7 Cockermouth to Dimmingsdale
Departed 0900 Arrived 1900 204 miles.
I wanted to see the steam boat museum also the Lakeland Motor museum, the Steam boat was closed so I had to settle for the Motor Museum. The lanes were over hung with trees and there was a lot of mud in places I lost the back a couple of times then onto Stoney Dale at this point the Garmin gave up giving names to the lanes as I approached a dirt track I could see the Hostel.
Day 8 Dimmingsdale to Cheddar
Departed 0800 Arrived 1645 188 miles.
I stopped at. The National Memorial Arboretum, Croxall Road, Alrewas, Staffordshire A very humbling experience.
Day 9 Cheddar to Lizard Point
Depart 0950 Arrived 1800 235 miles.
My room mate at Cheddar, a retired doctor had bought some local sausages for breakfast
Day 10 Lizard via Lands end to Salisbury
Depart 0800 Arrived 1730 280 miles.
Having re-fuelled both body and bike I prepared to set off when an old boy approached and started a conversation about Velocette's it turned out he had been a keen follower of Brands Hatch in the 1960's we had a nearly an hour discussing the various riders and bikes we followed.
Day 11 Salisbury and Home
Depart 0900 Arrived 1800 145 miles.
All was well until we saw the signs for Slough !!! We stopped to see if by re-programming the Garmin we could avoid the city of London but in the end we stayed with Aunty Garmin as she had got us round Britain with no real problems. We saw bits of outer and inner London I have not seen before or would like too again!
